Reading Level Benchmarks

Have you ever been confused when given your child's reading level?  At Auburn Schools we use the DRA to assess student's reading. This assessment includes Oral Reading Fluency (Accuracy and Rate--Words Read Correctly Per Minute) and Comprehension.  These scores give us a Reading Level.  We use the Reading Level to find books during Guided Reading that are just right for your child to be instructed.  Here is a chart that shows DRA Levels and Guided Reading Levels, and how they match up for your child.

Finding "Just RIght" Books

A Just Right book is one that is comfortable to read but is still a little challenging.  You can become a better reader by reading these books.

Sometimes a book you choose may be TOO EASY.  A book is too easy if ....

  • you can read all the words smoothly with good expression.
  • you know how to say all of the words.
  • you can read the book very quickly.
  • you are not learning anything new when you read the book.

Sometimes a book you choose may be TOO HARD.  A book is too hard if ...

  • you have trouble with at least 5 words on the page.
  • you are puzzled about what is happening in this book.
  • your reading sounds very slow and choppy.
  • you get frustrated while reading.

Most of the books you choose should be JUST RIGHT.   A book is just-right if ...

  • you can read most of the words.
  • you understand what you are reading.
  • you can read the book with a voice that is fluent, not choppy.  It sounds like you are talking.
  • you can sound out the hard words and figure out what they mean by using the words around them.
  • you only need a little help from the teacher or another adult.
  • you really enjoy reading this book!
